Cumbria and Lancashire Area National Union of Students (CLANUS) is the local area National Union of Students for Cumbria and Lancashire. The area exists to support the work of NUS at a local level; to act as an effective link between Students' Unions and NUS nationally; help Students' Unions to work together; and to represent the views of its membership.
CLANUS assists Students' Unions in their campaigns by providing information, and putting them in contact with relevant organisations. The area also runs its own campaigns which are decided upon at area council. CLANUS has continued to campaign against student hardship hardship, tuition fees and hidden course costs in line with its policy passed at a previous meeting of the Area Council.
CLANUS supports FE Students' Unions by offering traning on issues including getting funding and facilities, getting full-time Students' Union Officers (sabbaticals) and helping to increase student involvment at a grass roots level. This year the area is pioneering a new union development initiative - the "Self Assessment and Development Stategy".
CLANUS believes that the best way to combat prejudice and discrimination is by building strong area networks. CLANUS has policy to run proactive campaigns in Further and Higher Education to combat discrimation against women students, lesbian, gay and bisexual students, and students with disabilities, as well as combating racism on college campuses.
